Key Ayurvedic Principles
- Osteoarthritis (Sandhivata) is fundamentally a Vata-drying disease causing depletion of Shleshaka Kapha (synovial fluid).
- Analgesics temporarily numb nerve signals while cartilage degenerates progressively underneath.
- Abhyantara Snehana (internal intake of medicated ghrita) lubricates joints from within systemic circulation.
- Janu Basti and Patra Pinda Swedana restore mobility and relieve joint crepitus without knee replacement.
The Fallacy of Symptom Numbing in Osteoarthritis
In modern rheumatology, knee and hip osteoarthritis are described as "wear-and-tear" mechanical failures. Patients are prescribed NSAIDs, paracetamol, and intra-articular cortisone shots. While pain signals are temporarily blocked, NSAIDs inhibit proteoglycan synthesis in cartilage, actually accelerating joint destruction.
Classical Ayurveda views Sandhivata not merely as mechanical wear, but as a severe vitiation of Vata Dosha characterized by Rookshata (dryness), Laghuta (lightness), and Chalatva (instability). When Vata enters joint cavities (Sandhi), it consumes Shleshaka Kapha—the natural Ayurvedic equivalent of synovial fluid.
“Vatapoornadritiriva sparshaha shophaha sandhigate anile” — Acharya Charaka (When Vata settles in the joints, they swell like an air-filled bladder, crepitate on movement, and ache intensely).
Snehana: Restoring the Lost Fluid Medium
You cannot fix a squeaking, dry engine hinge by grinding it down; you lubricate it. Similarly, the primary therapeutic weapon against Sandhivata is Snehana (medicated unction).
At Atharva Ayurved, patients receive internal Snehana using medicated ghee formulations like Guggulutiktaka Ghrita or Mahasneha. These lipid molecules bypass the stomach, integrate into systemic lymphatics, and reach deep joint capsules where water-soluble drugs cannot penetrate.
Targeted Local Procedures: Janu Basti & Dhanyamla Dhara
To complement internal unction, localized warm oil pooling (Janu Basti) is performed directly over the knee joints using Dhanwantharam and Murivenna oils. The hydrostatic pressure drives bioactive herbal alkaloids into periarticular ligaments and subchondral bone.
Combined with herbal fomentation (Patra Pinda Swedana), this protocol systematically relieves joint morning stiffness, restores smooth flexion, and has prevented knee replacement in hundreds of elderly patients.
