Key Ayurvedic Principles
- Psoriasis is categorized under Ekakushtha / Kitibha Kushtha caused by deep blood and liver toxicity.
- Topical steroid ointments suppress skin symptoms temporarily while driving toxicity deeper into organs.
- Virechana Karma eliminates accumulated acidic bile and toxins from the liver and gallbladder.
- Raktamokshana (Leech Therapy) selectively removes stagnant venous blood from resistant psoriasis plaques.
The Fallacy of Topical Steroids in Chronic Skin Conditions
When patients present with red, scaly, silvery plaques on their elbows, scalp, or knees, modern dermatologists routinely prescribe topical corticosteroid ointments or methotrexate. Over time, steroids thin the dermis, induce dependency, and trigger catastrophic rebound flares whenever discontinued.
Skin is an external mirror of internal blood purity. In the Charaka Samhita, all severe dermatological conditions (Kushtha Roga) involve the simultaneous vitiation of four biological entities (Dhatus): Vata, Pitta, Kapha, and Rakta (blood tissue). You cannot cure an internal blood disorder merely by applying creams to the surface.
The 3-Phase Clinical Protocol at Atharva Ayurved
1. Raktashodhana & Deepana: Internal administration of bitter, cooling herbs like Khadirarishta, Manjistha, and Neem to purify circulating blood.
2. Classical Virechana: Therapeutic purgation with medicated castor oil or Avipattikar Churna to eliminate toxic bile from the liver and gastrointestinal tract.
3. Raktamokshana (Jalaukavacharana / Leech Therapy): Medicinal leeches applied to thick, recalcitrant plaques secrete hirudin and anti-inflammatory enzymes, rapidly reducing itching and skin flaking.
